Huge Moose Taken in Northwest Territories
Feast your eyes on this! This huge moose was recently taken in Canada's Northwest Territories. The brute has a 67-inch spread and gross green-scores 256 B & C. With deductions, it net green-scores at 249 B & C. The moose is expected to rank somewhere between 10 and 15 in the Boone & Crockett Record Book once the drying period is over in early December.
The lucky hunter who killed this impressive trophy is Jan Boenicke from Germany. He hunted with guide Jim Rae of South Nahanni Outfitters (www.huntnahanni.com) in the MacKenzie Mountains. Outfitter Werner Aschbacher says a full third of the moose taken in his area this season scored well enough to make the Boone & Crockett minimum. Four clients took moose that scored 210 or better for the Boone & Crockett Awards Book and another four broke 224 for Boone & Crockett's All Time records book.
Aschbacher says the key to producing outsized moose like this is that he uses a helicopter to access areas that have never been hunted before in his concession. He also makes a practice of letting hunted areas rest at least a year before hunting them again. Hunts are conducted on foot as traditional spot-and-stalk affairs, following a 12-hour waiting period after flying. Aschbacher stresses that the helicopter is used strictly to access the hunting area. South Nahanni's concession spans 12,500 square miles, or 2.5 million hectares, of roadless wilderness in southwestern NWT.
Elk Hunting Recommendations From Hunting Report Subscribers
Looking for a good elk hunt? Here are three recommendations from Hunting Report subscribers. The first is Tom Pilkington who hunted in New Mexico last September with Kerry Sebring of Sebring's High Lonesome Outfitters (www.nmelkoutfitters.com). He hunted near Nogal and says that out of 14 hunters, 12 took bulls scoring 320 to 370. Most of the trophies measured between 350 and 360. Pilkington says the unit is home to a large population of elk with numbers of trophy-class bulls. The hunting, however, is tough with very rugged, steep terrain. Base camp is at 6,500 feet and the hunting may require climbing up as much as another 3,000 feet. Pilkington warns that hunters must be in excellent physical shape for this hunt. "Whatever condition you think you are in, it is not good enough," he says.
Pilkington says the guides are very aggressive hunters who will climb and work hard to put clients on trophy elk. The unit he hunted is a draw unit, but Pilkington says Sebring has access to landowner tags.
The second report is from Rich Papaprieto who hunted in Utah this past September with J&J Outfitters (www.jandjoutfitters.com). He killed a 360-inch bull on a ranch enrolled in Utah's Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit Program (CWMU). This program provides hunting permits to landowners in exchange for them managing their properties under a carefully developed habitat and management plan. Papaprieto says outfitter Jed Wayment has access to about a dozen of these properties, and that he has hunted them with Wayment on two other occasions for mule deer.
Papaprieto says his latest hunt was during the elk rut in mid-September and that he saw 10 to 20 elk a day in the 300- to 340-class. He says he was surrounded by "screaming" bulls each day. He describes the terrain as aspen and pine country and says the hunt can be as hard or as easy as a hunter wants because the ranch is so well roaded. Papaprieto says Wayment is very serious about his hunting and carefully manages all of the ranches he hunts. He highly recommends him for both mule deer and elk.
And lastly, subscriber Lee Frudden has good things to say about an archery elk hunt he enjoyed in Arizona this past September with Double D Outfitters (www.doubledoutfittersaz.com). He reports seeing 400-class bulls every day and took an elk that scored 370 B & C. Frudden hunted a ranch in northwest Arizona, where Double D Outfitters enjoys exclusive guiding rights. This ranch has hosted Governor's Permit hunters and produced bulls scoring over 400 points.
The ranch encompasses 60,000 acres that border an Indian reservation on one side. Frudden describes the terrain as easy, low rolling country and says that any hunter in reasonable shape could hunt there. While Frudden says the ranch is not covered in elk, the animals it holds are of fantastic quality. He says he had two 400-class bulls in sight on different days at 80 and 100 yards.
Frudden says the permit for this hunt can be difficult to draw. He was successful applying for an archery permit with two bonus points. The rifle hunt is tougher to get. Frudden gives Double D Outfitters an all-excellent rating. "I have done a lot of hunting," he says, "and this was one of the very best hunts I have ever done."

Siatwinda
In 1962 Elizabeth Balneaves wrote a book about the life of Zambia Problem Animal Control Officer Joe McGregor Brooks. Obviously, a lot had happened between 1962 and 1992, so Brooks wrote his own book with the help of Ashly Palles. Here then is the story of an elephant control officer in Zambia as well as a PH, crocodile hunter, crocodile breeder, and, in general, an adventuresome individual.
It is true that biographies of professional hunters are many, and only the good stories stand out, but this is a good story. In the beginning of his career, Joe met "Crazy Mack" who took him along hunting for crocs in a leaky boat and showed Joe the ropes of elephant hunting. Mack was a Scot who walked around in a roughly woven woolen kilt and was slightly odd because of his traumatic experiences in WWII. His career launched, Brooks went from ridding a village of a man-killing elephant to shooting two crop-raiding pachyderms with one shot. Crocodiles were of great interest to Brooks, and he hunted some outsized monsters, including one that went over twenty feet. On another occasion, Brooks was asked to dislodge a long-since dead elephant carcass from a river. As he pulled the body out of the water with his vehicle, several people jumped on it to float along . . . that is till the carcass turned over and everybody fell in among the crocs that were following their meal!
Brooks's lifetime of being in the wilds of Africa has yielded some interesting stories, and this well-written account is a very worthwhile read. Joe Brooks still lives in Zambia today, and if you are lucky, you can see him if you visit his crocodile farm in Choma and Livingstone.

DVD: Hunting The African Elephant
Charlton, a Zimbabwe elephant PH and self-described pachyderm nut, has thirty kills and no less than four charges. But it is not a kill and blood fest; rather it is an instructional video on the art of hunting the world’s largest land mammal. Exciting, well-paced footage takes you up-close and personal with large bulls and mean tusksless cow elephants, which are known to be highly neurotic and prone to charges.

New!.....New!.....New! Ask The Elk Guides
When J. Y. Jones decided to write a book on elk hunting, he went to the most reliable source for information—professional elk guides and outfitters. He asked the experts careful questions on how best to hunt elk. This book is the result of his painstaking research and extensive interviews. ..........
New!.....New!.....New! Ask The Mule Deer Guides202 pages with photos
The Ask the Guides series of books, authored by J. Y. Jones, is the most successful series of North American hunting books ever published by Safari Press. The books are thorough, rely on the most trusted and reliable guides in the industry, and give a huge amount of information that simply cannot be acquired by any one person or even a few authors in a lifetime. ..........
DVD: BIG GAME PROFILES
This is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive film ever undertaken on big-game hunting in North America, for it covers all big game from the Bering Sea to the deserts of Sonora.
Based on a made-for-TV series, this is a first rate-production. The Leupold optics company underwrote the production, and it is obvious right from the start that the producer pulled out all stops for this project. In addition, the Boone & Crocket Club provided historical information, records of the largest trophies recorded, and photos..........
New!.....New!.....New! Presale: Shot Placement and Trophy Evaluation
Item is on backorder. If ordered, your credit card will not be charged until the item is shipped.
Much has been said in recent years about shooting only completely mature, solidly bossed Cape or southern buffalo bulls for trophy purposes. But what does such a bull really look like? Can you tell the difference between a trophy bull and a younger or medium-age bull with soft bosses that still has breeding potential? What are the characteristics of a true trophy bull?..........
DVD: BODDINGTON ON ELEPHANT WITH IVAN CARTERDVD, running time approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes on 2 disks.
Item is on backorder. If ordered, your credit card will not be charged until the item is shipped.
Those who have seen the Boddington On Buffalo 1 and 2 know that these movies are an interesting mix of educational and action footage. The producers have kept to this well-proven concept, but they have taken a radically different subject matter-the world's largest land animal. Boddington on Elephant shows us tactics and gives us advice on how elephants are to be hunted, and it entertains us with good, well-filmed field footage of hunters in action..........
It Shouldn't Happen Light-hearted African Adventures
Doctari (aka Kevin Robertson) is well known for his superlative series of books on shot placement, including Nyati, The Perfect Shot, and Africa's Most Dangerous, which is a complete dissertation on the Cape buffalo that also includes shot placement. These books have become classics in their time because of the authority, the experience, and the descriptive powers Doctari has brought to each project. They simply could not have been written by just anyone.....

DVD: Mountain Buffalo Wilderness Hunting In Tanzania
"The taking of an animal should not be too easy. The risk of an unsuccessful outcome adds mystery and personalizes the hunting experience and is therefore a pre-requisite." So, Rainer Josch sets the tone for his DVD Mountain Buffalo. Set in the mountains of Tanzania's northern Masailands, this DVD captures the experience of hunting old Dagga boys in thick mountain forests. From the opening scenes, Josch draws the viewer into the unusually lush landscape.........
Along The Hunter's Path
There are not many hunting books, in my view, that deserve to be described as blockbusters, but Along The Hunter's Path is certainly one of them. Written originally in German by Namibian PH Kai-Uwe Denker, and only now translated into English, it is a huge sprawl of a book that is at once a wonderful collection of hunting tales… a hymn to wild and solitary places… and a celebration of the very act of hunting itself.
DVD: Zambezi Extreme
This is the second DVD by Charlton McCallum Safaris, the first being their excellent elephant hunting DVD. This movie focuses on the Zambezi River and the hunting specifically found along its banks in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. At the end of this huge river we find Lake Cabora Bassa (Mozambique), and the movie begins with the shooting of some monster crocs.......

The Empty Carousel: A Consumer’s Guide to Checked and Carry-on Luggage
