New World Record Mountain Goat

See Our Video Hunt Reports
A possible new world record Pope & Young mountain goat has been taken in northwest British Columbia. The goat scored 54 2/8 inches, comfortably surpassing the current Number One of 53 inches. The lucky bowhunter who bagged this exceptional trophy is Tim Metcalfe. He hunted the Telegraph Creek area with Greg Williams of Golden Bear Outfitting (www.goldenbearoutfitting.com). A second hunter on this same hunt also took a Pope & Young goat that scores 53 6/8. What's truly remarkable is that this is the outfitter's first year operating in this hunt area.

Williams purchased the Telegraph Creek concession just last year and has not yet explored all of it. The area encompasses about five million acres of pristine wilderness, spanning four ecological zones. It's mostly roadless, requiring access by plane, horseback, or jet boat on 300 miles of navigable river. Williams is currently exploring large chunks of the concession that the previous owner never hunted because he used only horses and simply could not access all of it. Williams estimates that 75 percent of the area has not been hunted in decades. A pilot with two planes, he intends to access more remote areas.

During his first season in operation, Williams took about 20 hunters and produced a Boone & Crocket grizzly bear, two moose that field scored Boone & Crockett, three representative Stone sheep, and two Pope & Young goats.

A Warning About Diana Hunting Tours

Scores of hunters who booked trips through the European booking agency Diana Hunting Tours have had to return home without hunting because the company has not paid operators for trips it has booked. According to a press release issued just last week by Diana's corporate parent, DTG Sweden AB, the company is in financial trouble due to severe liquidity problems. It also reports that a backlog in company accounting was discovered recently.

The problems apparently started many months ago, as a company press release on Diana's web site states it had to end relations with two hunting operators this summer due to problems with advance payments. There has also been a rash of resignations on the board of directors at DTG, which is a publicly traded company in Europe. Late this past September, DTG even fired its executive director, who was hired only this past March. DTG replaced him with a turnaround specialist whose mission was to increase the company's liquidity. That specialist resigned last week.

The Hunting Report left messages at Diana Hunting Tours and DTG Sweden AB, but no one has returned our calls. If you have a pending hunt that you booked through Diana, contact your hunt operator right away. Do not get on a plane without verifying that your hunt was properly booked and paid for. See the November issue of The Hunting Report for the complete story. - Barbara Crown, Editor.

Featured New Book:

It Shouldn't Happen
Light-hearted African Adventures

By Kevin "Doctari" Robertson
First edition, limited to 1,000 signed, numbered and slip-cased copies.

Doctari (aka Kevin Robertson) is well known for his superlative series of books on shot placement, including Nyati, The Perfect Shot, and Africa's Most Dangerous, which is a complete dissertation on the Cape buffalo that also includes shot placement. These books have become classics in their time because of the authority, the experience, and the descriptive powers Doctari has brought to each project. They simply could not have been written by just anyone.

These books were the culmination of Kevin's experience as a PH for years upon years in the bush, his knowledge of veterinary medicine, and his understanding of ballistics. Some of his experiences come from having hunted with multiple clients for dangerous game, and over the years he has had a number of funny, interesting, and sad encounters. Now for the first time ever, Doctari has committed these stories to paper, and we get to read some of the silly things he, his friends, and his clients have done.

We guarantee these anecdotes will keep you entertained for hours. There are two particularly lively stories on the ferocity of lion running amuck in a safari camp. One is entitled "Madonna," and in it Kevin defends his and his wife's honor with a bottle of Johnson's Baby Shampoo! He's actually lucky to be alive to tell the tale. In the chapter entitled "Like a Ghost in the Darkness," an old lion wrecks mayhem in a camp inhabited by two drunken hunters, who flee the scene without taking any of their gear. There was good reason, indeed, for their fear. In the chapter "Dumber Still" we learn that chasing a bull elephant from your garden with an empty soda-pop bottle is not to be recommended, even for a PH well versed in big-game hunting. "Jump Buck" is the lively story of a wounded springbok that races off with a very expensive rifle wrapped around its neck!

It's always refreshing to sit down with a good book that is full of wonderful stories; some things in life just don't get any better. Pull up a chair and read along as Doctari relates his stories as though they are being told around a campfire in a safari camp. This is one book you will not easily forget.

Not sold in bookstores.

The Empty Carousel: A Consumer’s Guide to Checked and Carry-on Luggage

If you travel to hunt, you already know what a headache air travel has become. Lost guns, new gun-handling fees and now even gun embargoes are becoming the rule. On top of that, there is the mounting problem of lost and stolen luggage. The twin problems are enough to make you want to stay at home.......

DVD: BODDINGTON ON ELEPHANT WITH IVAN CARTER
DVD, running time approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes on 2 disks.

Item is on backorder. If ordered, your credit card will not be charged until the item is shipped.

Those who have seen the Boddington On Buffalo 1 and 2 know that these movies are an interesting mix of educational and action footage. The producers have kept to this well-proven concept, but they have taken a radically different subject matter-the world's largest land animal. Boddington on Elephant shows us tactics and gives us advice on how elephants are to be hunted, and it entertains us with good, well-filmed field footage of hunters in action..........

New!.....New!.....New!

DVD: BIG GAME PROFILES

This is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive film ever undertaken on big-game hunting in North America, for it covers all big game from the Bering Sea to the deserts of Sonora.

Based on a made-for-TV series, this is a first rate-production. The Leupold optics company underwrote the production, and it is obvious right from the start that the producer pulled out all stops for this project. In addition, the Boone & Crocket Club provided historical information, records of the largest trophies recorded, and photos..........

New Zealand Country Report

The Hunting Report's New Zealand Country Report is now available! Whether you've hunted New Zealand 10 times or you're planning your first safari there, our New Zealand Country Report is packed with facts and details that will help you with every aspect of your hunt. This 62-page 8 x 5-inch book breaks out each hunting area on both islands, providing a map and information on species and free-range hunting, including how abundant free-ranging game really is. Note: Not every species is available in any one area or even on the same island..........

OBSESSED!

There is no person we know of who has hunted in the Pamirs for Marco Polo more than Soudy. Besides having numerous poli over 60 inches, he has hunted sheep in just about every conceivable place on earth, and he holds a number of world records as well as numerous top-ten heads.........

Along The Hunter's Path

There are not many hunting books, in my view, that deserve to be described as blockbusters, but Along The Hunter's Path is certainly one of them. Written originally in German by Namibian PH Kai-Uwe Denker, and only now translated into English, it is a huge sprawl of a book that is at once a wonderful collection of hunting tales… a hymn to wild and solitary places… and a celebration of the very act of hunting itself.

DVD: Mountain Buffalo
Wilderness Hunting In Tanzania

"The taking of an animal should not be too easy. The risk of an unsuccessful outcome adds mystery and personalizes the hunting experience and is therefore a pre-requisite." So, Rainer Josch sets the tone for his DVD Mountain Buffalo. Set in the mountains of Tanzania's northern Masailands, this DVD captures the experience of hunting old Dagga boys in thick mountain forests. From the opening scenes, Josch draws the viewer into the unusually lush landscape.........

PRESALE: MEN FOR ALL SEASONS AND LEGENDARY LADIES
(You will not be charged until the book is shipped, but ordering now reserves a copy.)

The word safari is full of excitement. It makes you think of adventure and romance, of strange new places and excitingly different people. Rowland Ward's latest publication, Men for All Seasons, is the story of the principal actors on the great safari scene-the professional hunters. In the early part of the twentieth century, many of these hunters were amateurs - pioneer farmers or army officers on leave......

This is the second DVD by Charlton McCallum Safaris, the first being their excellent elephant hunting DVD. This movie focuses on the Zambezi River and the hunting specifically found along its banks in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. "Boddington on Buffalo, II"
(DVD - 2-disc set.
Run time, 4 hours.)

Craig Boddington's landmark DVD "Boddington on Buffalo" set a new standard in outdoor film making, and now Craig again teams with Safari Classics Productions on the much-anticipated sequel to the original classic with the release of "Boddington on Buffalo, II, The Future is Now.....

DVD: Hunting The African Elephant

Charlton, a Zimbabwe elephant PH and self-described pachyderm nut, has thirty kills and no less than four charges. But it is not a kill and blood fest; rather it is an instructional video on the art of hunting the world’s largest land mammal. Exciting, well-paced footage takes you up-close and personal with large bulls and mean tusksless cow elephants, which are known to be highly neurotic and prone to charges.
